As a Data Platform Engineering Manager, you’ll lead a team focused on building a robust and scalable foundation for data, supporting our data platform, services and tooling and products from storage to visualization for improving company-wide productivity, strategy and decision-making with data. These initiatives include establishing a unified framework for data ingestion and laying the technical foundation to expand safe and efficient data access while maintaining clarity and control over data use.

You have a passion for helping teams design, implement, and operate stable, scalable, and efficient solutions to flow data from production systems into data lakes & data warehouses. You are curious about all the nuances in the source data systems & always make an effort to assert data quality checks and improve documentation. You have experience operating production systems at scale and ensuring little downtime. You enjoy designing concrete solutions and converting technical debt into strategic opportunities for our company.

You love mentoring other data engineers and are passionate about data engineering & data infrastructure best practices. You also enjoy working cross-collaboratively across Analytics, Data Science, Data Engineers, Engineers, DevOps, Privacy and Security.

This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.

What you can expect:

  • Lead the design and implementation of the next generation of platforms, tools and products

  • Responsible for detailed architecture, POC, design, advising and often hands-on implementation of complex systems including software and integration with existing systems at 1Password

  • Lead and help create data engineering solutions that follow Repeatable Software engineering platforms and tools

  • Own and architect scalable solutions that are implementable with principles of extensibility, scalability, modular and easy to use with generalization principles

  • Co-develop and help stand-up operational stability and quality along with Engineering teams through Observability

  • Develop and manage SLO’s, performance and optimization opportunities of the cloud platforms

  • Help create and implement data governance structures that ensure adherence and adoption of data policies

  • Provide recommendations on cost-avoidance and optimization of cloud environments

  • Mentor technical engineers on operationalizing data solutions and ensuring automation through the data value chain

  • Champion platform standards, tooling, and processes

  • Establish effective organizational structures, anticipating or adopting to a changing environment

  • Create impact at all levels of the organization as torch-bearer for data platform engineering principles

  • Manage the roles and workflows of a team dedicated to data platform engineering


What we're looking for:

  • Minimum 3+ years of experience building and leading a team of high-performing data platform engineers

  • Experience building and deploying products that rely on large-scale distributed systems in Python or Go, Scala/Java, or other similar languages

  • Experience with large-scale, distributed systems design and development with an understanding of scaling, replication, consistency, and high availability

  • Experience in defining and developing high-volume, horizontally scalable architectures

  • Experience with system software design and development with an understanding of computer architecture, storage, network, and IO subsystems

  • Experience with Big Data query engines such as Hive, Presto, Trino, Spark

  • Experience with data stores such as Redshift, MySQL, Postgres, Snowflake, etc.

  • Experience using Realtime technologies like Apache Kafka, Kinesis, Flink, etc.

  • Technical knowledge of Cloud Platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and open-source technologies

  • Background in performance tuning, identifying performance bottlenecks, and implementing performance optimizations

  • Can switch fluently between player/coach model (hands-on programmer with a good knowledge of data-structures and CS algorithms)

USA-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $177,000 USD and $239,000 USD plus immediate participation in 1Password's benefits program (health, dental, 401k and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.

Canada-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $158,000 CAD and $214,000 CAD, plus immediate participation in 1Password’s generous benefits program (health, dental, RRSP and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
