Orion Innovation is a premier, award-winning, global business and technology services firm. Orion delivers game-changing business transformation and product development rooted in digital strategy, experience design, and engineering, with a unique combination of agility, scale, and maturity. We work with a wide range of clients across many industries including financial services, professional services, telecommunications and media, consumer products, automotive, industrial automation, professional sports and entertainment, life sciences, ecommerce, and education.
We are seeking a pragmatic, seasoned Senior Infrastructure Engineer who bridges the gap between traditional enterprise data centers and public cloud environments. Our core product runs in AWS but actively enables complex virtual machine (VM) migrations back and forth between public and private clouds.
In this role, you will maintain and improve our production environment, support developer pipelines, and directly contribute to the platform features that power our customer migration tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate, secure, and scale production environments across both traditional data centers and public clouds.
- Build, improve, and troubleshoot features supporting automated physical-to-cloud (P2C), cloud-to-on-prem, and cross-data-center virtual machine migration workflows.
- Perform deep Linux-based systems administration, infrastructure hardening, and performance tuning.
- Investigate and resolve complex production incidents, performing root-cause analysis and implementing long-term reliability improvements.
- Manage and troubleshoot foundational networking components, firewalls, routing, load balancing, and virtual appliances (e.g., pfSense).
- Implement and refine infrastructure security, centralized logging, system monitoring, and alerting practices to ensure continuous uptime.
- Identify repetitive operational tasks and eliminate them through scripting and configuration management tools.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to support application deployment, maintain CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins), and troubleshoot EC2 connectivity/infrastructure bottlenecks.
- Author and maintain clear infrastructure diagrams, operational procedures, and runbooks.
Required Skills and Experience
- Strong background installing, configuring, and maintaining production-grade hardware and infrastructure in a physical data center.
- Deep, expert-level experience with at least one major on-premises virtualization platform: VMware / vSphere, Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization (hosting VMs), OpenStack, HPE Morpheus Essentials / HPE VM Essentials, Nutanix, Azure Local, or Microsoft Hyper-V.
- Hands-on experience deploying, maintaining, and monitoring production environments in AWS (specifically core IaaS features like EC2, EBS, VPC, and ELK/OpenSearch).
- Advanced Linux administration and troubleshooting skills under pressure.
- Deep understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, VPN, SSL/TLS, HTTP/HTTPS, routing, firewalls, and messaging swaps (e.g., AWS SES/SNS/SQS ↔ RabbitMQ).
- Scripting: Solid scripting skills using Python or Bash for build tasks and systems automation.
- Experience with configuration management tools, specifically Chef or Puppet.
- Proficient with Git, GitHub, and branching/pull request workflows, along with experience writing and maintaining Jenkinsfiles.
- Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision, take ownership of tasks, and execute reliably.
- Comfortable covering an afternoon/evening shift overlap to support team collaboration.
- Focused on utilizing standard, stable cloud features over overly complex, cloud-native abstractions.
- Comfortable participating in a live, hands-on troubleshooting and screen-share technical exercise during the interview process.
Nice to Have Experience
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC) experience with Terraform, Ansible, or similar tools.
- Deep knowledge of observability stacks (ELK, OpenSearch).
- Experience working in fast-paced, migration-heavy production environments.
