We manage critical security, market, and credit data, working closely with teams like Portfolio Management, Risk, and Compliance to ensure data accuracy and availability across our proprietary Aladdin® system. With over $30 trillion in AUM across six continents, DIG’s work is fundamental to BlackRock’s success.
About this role
We are seeking a Director of Engineering for the Data Integrity Group (DIG) to lead the intersection of reference data operations, platform engineering, and data governance. This role blends hands‑on engineering leadership with strategic ownership of data quality, risk, and operational excellence.
You will lead teams responsible for building and scaling data services, APIs, workflows, and controls that support both managed and self‑service data capabilities, while ensuring DIG’s reference data remains accurate, governed, and resilient in a highly regulated environment. This is a senior leadership role requiring deep technical expertise, strong people leadership, and the ability to partner across Aladdin’s product and engineering ecosystem.
Responsibilities:
Lead Reference Data Operations: Oversee day-to-day management of the Security Reference Data team. Ensure flawless integration of data loaders, ETL processes, and workflows. Serve as a subject matter expert on Aladdin Security, Issuer, and Credit data for internal and external stakeholders.
Engineering & Platform Leadership
Lead the design, build, and scaling of data platforms, backend services, APIs, and workflows supporting Security and Issuer Reference Data across Aladdin.
Partner with Product and Architecture teams to deliver cloud‑native, scalable, and resilient solutions aligned with the Next Generation Security Master strategy.
Drive modern engineering practices including API‑first design, service‑oriented architecture, automation, and observability.
Own technical roadmaps, break complex initiatives into executable milestones, and lead delivery using agile development methodologies.
Data Integrity, Governance & Risk
Establish and enforce data quality controls, validation frameworks, and monitoring to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and completeness of reference data.
Own operational and data risk within DIG, including issue identification, root‑cause analysis, escalation, and remediation.
Build governance frameworks that align with regulatory requirements and internal standards (e.g., auditability, lineage, control evidence).
Partner with Risk, Compliance, and Stewardship teams to ensure data processes meet evolving regulatory expectations.
Operational Excellence & Automation
Modernize DIG’s operating model by reducing manual workflows through automation, self‑service tooling, and intelligent controls.
Track performance metrics, trends, and incidents to continuously improve platform reliability and operational efficiency.
Drive scale by designing solutions that support growing asset classes, markets, and client use cases without linear cost increases.
Stakeholder & Client Partnership
Act as a senior partner to Product, Engineering, Investment, Risk, and Client teams, translating complex data and technical concepts into business outcomes.
Collaborate with external clients and internal consumers to deliver reliable, transparent, and extensible data services.
Represent DIG in senior forums, providing clear updates on platform health, risks, and strategic initiatives.
People & Organizational Leadership
Lead, mentor, and grow high‑performing engineering and data teams, fostering a culture of ownership, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Build strong succession plans and develop technical and leadership talent across regions.
Promote a culture of accountability, inclusion, and collaboration aligned with BlackRock’s principles.
Qualifications/Experience:
Experience: 10+ years in Engineering, Data Platforms, or large‑scale data operations, with significant leadership responsibility. Experience in Reference Data Management or Securities Data Operation. Proven track record in driving data operations for large-scale financial organizations.
Expertise: Deep knowledge of Security Reference Data, including asset types, market instruments (e.g., equities, fixed income, derivatives), corporate actions, and pricing conventions. Familiarity with data vendors (e.g., Bloomberg, Refinitiv, Reuters).
Tech-Savvy: Strong background in Data Architecture, Backend Sservices, APIs, Databases, and Cloud‑Native platforms.
