💻 Role

The Data Platforms team is builds scalable data movement, transformation, and retrieval platforms on Whatnot. As the Engineering Manager of the Data Infrastructure team, you’ll focus on developing, maintaining, and setting the vision for systems that enables Whatnot engineers to develop data-intensive product features at lightning speed, while unlocking cutting-edge production use cases, like real-time analytics, search, and AI.

In addition, you’ll:

  • hire and develop engineers across all platform applications and backend systems.

  • collaborate with product engineering, analytics, and infrastructure engineering counterparts to set strategic direction of the team, advocating for platform solutions that help us grow Whatnot as a whole.

  • plan and manage projects, coordinating and aligning your team‘s goals against others across the business.

Required to be within commuting distance of our Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, or San Francisco Hubs

👋 About You

In addition to embodying our cultural principles, great candidates will also:

  • have hands-on experience with public cloud environments (AWS, GCP) using Kubernetes, Docker, and IaC tools like Terraform.

  • have previous experience at a hyper-growth startup. You’re an excellent problem solver and a self-starter who can hit the ground running with little direction.

  • be a technical leader with hands-on experience in streaming (e.g. Kafka, Clickhouse), production data stores (e.g. Postgres, DynamoDB, Redis), or analytics systems (e.g. Snowflake, Iceberg) at scale.

  • have experience leading a team of engineers, guiding them through both their career development, and executing in a high growth environment.

  • be low ego, have an appetite to build, and employ good judgment in making hard trade-offs with limited resources.

  • effectively recruit, mentor, retain, and measure high performing teams.

  • effectively manage stakeholders, competing priorities and deal with ambiguity

  • have a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience.
