Team Overview
This role sits within the Aladdin Engineering – Enterprise Engineering organization, focused on MyLifePath, BlackRock’s retirement and annuity platform.
The team builds scalable, resilient, and secure applications using cloud‑native technologies and is responsible for application development and support, including user interfaces and integrations for internal and external services.
Role Description
We are seeking an experienced Application Engineer who is passionate about building high‑quality software and scaling technology to meet future business needs.
The role involves developing and supporting MyLifePath applications for external customers, contributing to continuous improvement across production and QA environments, and collaborating closely with engineering, product, and platform teams.
Key Responsibilities
1. Develop and maintain backend application components for the MyLifePath platform under guidance from senior engineers
2. Implement services using microservices architecture and approved enterprise frameworks
3. Contribute to application development using Java (21+) and Kotlin within Spring‑based ecosystems
4. Support integration with messaging and event‑driven platforms such as Azure Service Bus
5. Assist with testing activities including unit, integration, and automated tests
6. Participate in Agile ceremonies and follow established SDLC, CI/CD, and quality practices
7. Help identify and resolve defects, performance issues, and operational risks
8. Follow secure coding standards and contribute to system reliability and availability
Required Technical Skills
1. Backend development experience using Java 21+ and/or Kotlin
2. Working knowledge of Spring framework, including Spring Boot, Spring Data, Spring Security, and Spring Integration
3. Familiarity with testing frameworks such as JUnit
4. Basic experience with messaging and integration platforms (e.g., Azure Service Bus)
5. Exposure to database technologies such as Azure Cosmos DB and MS SQL
6. Understanding of containerization concepts using Docker and orchestration basics (e.g., Kubernetes)
7. Awareness of cloud‑native development principles and distributed systems concepts
8. Leverage approved AI developer assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Windsurf) to improve productivity across coding, debugging, and test creation, while adhering to firm guidelines.
Education & Experience
1. Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering
2. Typically 2–4 years of experience in application development, software engineering, or a related role
3. Foundational understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
4. Exposure to source control, issue tracking, Agile/Scrum practices, and CI/CD tools
