Job Description:
The Release Train Engineer (RTE) facilitates an Agile Release Train (ART) at the Program level and is responsible for program execution of the value stream, assist the team in the delivery of innovative software products, escalating impediments, managing risk, and helping drive continuous improvement for the ART.
RTEs are responsible for facilitating ART events including Planning Increment (PI), PI execution events, tracking of progress, System Demos, and Inspect & Adapt. The RTE ensures mission execution, coaches at the ART and Team levels, and provides guidance in methodologies like Agile, Scrum, DevSecOps, and Kanban.
Responsibilities:
Planning, coordination, and delivery
- Leads and serves as the highest authority on the implementation and optimization for the SAFe methodology within the ART
- Ensure the quality and timeliness of deliverables in the ART by managing dependencies and risks
- Manages and optimizes the flow of value within the ART using a variety of tools and methods to ensure strategy and execution are in alignment
- Assist Scrum Masters in the execution of Planning increments (PI’s).
- Ensure backlogs are complete, relevant and in alignment with strategic objectives and follows DoR and DoD standards
Facilitation & coaching
- Facilitates and drive ART ceremonies including PI planning, Scrum of Scrums, System Demo’s and Inspect and Adapt sessions.
- Measure and improve ART performance (maturity) through clearly defined metrics Coach and advise leaders, teams and scrum masters in Lean-Agile practices, mindsets and execution
- Coach and support the team in applying the agile way of working (Scrum, KanBan, ScrumBan) that fits best with the type of work they have.
Communication and collaboration
- Serve as the primary point of contact for all ART stakeholders. - Communicates progress, status and challenges to stakeholders including senior management and ensures that business strategy and technology strategy are connected.
- Foster collaboration between teams, product management, system architects and services
- Identify and resolve conflicts that impede the ARTs progress
Leadership
- Provide a servant leadership style aimed at support and guiding teams and stakeholders
- Performs functional allocation of resources to identified and required tasks and their dependencies Develop and maintain a high level of team morale and cohesion
- Drive an empower the ART to self-organize and self-manage
- Communicates progress, status and challenges to stakeholders including senior management
Requirements:
- 5+ years of experience in a Release Train Engineer or similar role within an Agile environment.
- Proven track record in delivery management, with experience leading cross-functional teams.
- Strong understanding of SAFe principles and practices, with a focus on flow metrics
- Technical awareness with good domain knowledge
- Excellent facilitation, coaching, and mentoring skills.
- Proficiency in Agile tools and metrics tracking.
- A understanding of the phases of software delivery (SDLC)
- Ability to motivate teams
- Ability to think beyond day-to-day activities and apply system thinking
