About the role:
As a Senior Technical Writing Manager at SmartBear, you will own the vision, strategy, and execution of technical documentation across SmartBear’s developer and testing product portfolio. You will lead and scale a high-performing team of technical writers while partnering closely with Product, Engineering, UX, and other stakeholders to ensure documentation is a strategic asset that drives product adoption and customer success.
In this role, you are accountable not only for content quality, but also for style guide standards systems, workflow improvements and writing based on data. You will guide the organization in simplifying complex technical concepts, advancing best documentation practices, and leveraging automation and AI to improve efficiency and impact.
In this role, you will:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of technical writers, including hiring, performance management, and career development.
- Define and own documentation strategy, standards, and governance across multiple product areas and teams.
- Partner with senior stakeholders to align documentation priorities with product roadmaps, release planning, and business objectives.
- Ensure documentation is accurate, accessible, user-centered, and consistent across platforms and delivery channels.
- Drive continuous improvement of documentation workflows, including automation, tooling modernization, and AI-driven efficiencies.
- Plan, prioritize, and oversee documentation deliverables across multiple release cycles and concurrent initiatives.
- Establish and maintain style guidelines, information architecture, and information design best practices at scale.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives that improve documentation quality, scalability, and team effectiveness.
- Measure documentation impact using qualitative and quantitative signals and use insights to inform strategy and investment.
We are looking for you if you have:
- 7+ years of experience in technical writing or documentation, with 4+ years of experience leading or managing technical writing teams.
- Proven cases demonstrating ownership of complex, developer-focused documentation ecosystems.
- Proven experience defining and executing documentation strategy, content planning, and documentation tooling at scale.
- Deep familiarity with a range of content types, including user guides, release notes, API documentation, and open-source documentation.
- Strong understanding of modern documentation ecosystems, including CCMS platforms, Git-based workflows, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Hands-on experience applying AI to documentation workflows, such as content generation, quality validation, taxonomy alignment, or process optimization.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and collaborate effectively with product managers, UX designers, engineering leaders, and other senior stakeholders.
- Exceptional communication, editing, coaching, and mentoring skills.
- Experience operating in agile or DevOps-driven development environments.
- A passion for simplifying complex technical concepts and delivering high-quality, customer-centered documentation experiences.
