Job Summary:

What you need to know about the role-
This is a Staff Engineer role within the RaaS AES team, focused on leading platform-scale initiatives that improve reliability, automation, and intelligent support across our Risk-as-a-Service products. We’re looking for a highly experienced professional who combines strong technical expertise—especially in AI and systems engineering—with leadership capabilities to drive strategic, hands-on projects.

You’ll be responsible for building value-added tools that enhance observability, scalability, and operational efficiency. Your AI experience will play a key role in enabling smarter operations and reducing manual effort across engineering and support teams. This role demands end-to-end ownership: executing technical work, ensuring timely delivery, and aligning with stakeholders to drive impactful outcomes.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Acts as a project or system leader, coordinating the activities of other engineers on the project or within the system
  • Determines the technical tasks that other engineers will follow
  • Actions result in the achievement of customer, operational, program or service objectives
  • Proactively improves existing structures & processes
  • Exercises judgement in reconciling diverse and competing priorities (time, quality, complexity risk) to identify optimal solutions to problems
  • Notices patterns and condenses repetition into densely meaningful generalized solutions
  • Collaborates with management to set/improve standards for engineering rigor
  • Trusted to represent PayPal, Inc to the outside world via interactions with partners, customers, or industry organizations

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience and a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Our team focuses on building tools and platforms that streamline workflows, enhance observability, and drive automation across critical operational processes. We work closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, data scientists, and DevOps engineers, to ensure seamless collaboration and impactful results.

  • Collaborate on AI-driven solutions to tackle complex operational challenges and improve workflows. 

  • Mentor and guide junior engineers while contributing to hands-on development. 

 

Your Day-to-Day

Leadership and Execution
  • Lead and deliver backend engineering initiatives that enhance the scalability, reliability, and observability of PayPal’s Risk-as-a-Service (RaaS) platform.
  • Own projects end-to-end — from design and planning to implementation and rollout — ensuring measurable operational improvements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define technical strategies, drive automation, and align platform capabilities with RaaS goals.
  • Mentor engineers and promote best practices in system design, performance, and operational excellence.
Technical Development and Innovation
  • Design and build backend systems and internal tools in Python and Java to improve monitoring, automation, and overall platform efficiency.
  • Develop and integrate AI/ML-powered solutions that enable intelligent observability, predictive operations, and reduced manual intervention.
  • Enhance reliability through better logging, alerting, and data-driven insights using tools such as Datadog, Splunk, and Looker.
  • Lead debugging, root-cause analysis, and resolution of complex production issues across RaaS systems.
Continuous Improvement and Collaboration
  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, eliminate redundancy, and scale platform capabilities.
  • Partner across engineering, data, and operations teams to ensure RaaS services run efficiently and evolve with business needs.
  • Foster a culture of automation, resilience, and continuous improvement within the platform organization.

What do you need to bring-

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with a proven track record of driving and delivering complex, cross-functional technical initiatives at scale. 

  • Deep expertise in system design and architecture, particularly in cloud environments (AWS preferred), with a strong understanding of microservices and distributed systems. 

  • Hands-on experience with AI/ML concepts and frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn), especially applied to DevOps, observability, support automation, or intelligent data solutions. 

  • Strong programming skills in Python and Java, with proficiency in SQL and experience working with data platforms such as BigQuery. 

  • Solid understanding of algorithms, data structures, and machine learning pipelines, including experience with LLMs, RAG frameworks, and model deployment strategies (e.g., MCP servers, vector databases). 

  • Demonstrated ability to influence through technical strategy, mentor engineers, and align cross-team efforts toward platform goals. 

  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability, with the ability to drive outcomes in ambiguous environments and under evolving priorities. 

  • Experience in refactoring or modernizing legacy systems, balancing performance, reliability, and maintainability. 

  • Familiarity with monitoring and BI tools (e.g., Datadog, Splunk, Looker, Tableau, Power BI) to support data-driven decision-making and visibility. 

  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with comfort navigating fast-paced, high-change environments and cross-functional dynamics.
