Staff Software Engineer (Backend - Java Focus)

The Opportunity
As a Staff Software Engineer (Backend), you will serve as a critical technical leader, setting the architectural direction and operational standards for our most impactful, high-scale services. You will directly influence engineering excellence across multiple teams, drive the delivery of complex features, and ensure the reliability and security of the core Circles X platform. This role requires deep systems thinking, a relentless focus on quality, and a passion for mentoring the next generation of technical leaders.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Architecture
Define Technical Strategy: Establish and drive the long-term technical vision and architectural roadmap for core backend services within your domain.
Design & Delivery: Lead the design and implementation of highly-scalable, highly-available, and secure microservices, primarily using Java/Spring Boot.
Platform Enablement: Architect and build reusable libraries, frameworks, and technology platforms that address common, multi-use cases across the engineering organization.
Drive Excellence: Define, enforce, and advocate for engineering best practices, coding standards, and systematic thinking across the platform group.
Operational Excellence & Reliability
Service Ownership: Hold end-to-end service ownership, responsible for the performance, security, availability, scalability, and other “ilities" of all microservices under your purview.
SLA/SLO Champion: Own and drive operational readiness, constantly improving the SLO, SLI, and SLA of relevant production services.
Deep-Dive Problem Solving: Lead complex incident management, performing rigorous Root Cause Analysis (RCA), executing immediate reactive fixes, and implementing robust long-term solutions.
Support: Provide expert-level L3 engineering support to resolve the most challenging production issues.
Mentorship & Collaboration
Raise the Bar: Provide technical mentorship, coaching, and guidance to engineers across the team, actively removing roadblocks and fostering an inclusive, high-performance culture.
Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate seamlessly with Product Managers and Designers stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical deliverables and ensure alignment on timelines.
Requirements
Experience - 10+ years in software development, including significant technical leadership or lead roles.
Core Technology - Expert proficiency in Java and server-side frameworks like Spring Boot. Experience with other languages (Node.js, Golang) is a plus.
Architecture- Strong design and architectural experience building high-scale, highly available products and distributed microservices platforms.
Databases - Hands-on experience with both NoSQL & SQL Databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis).
SDLC Mastery- Deep understanding of the entire Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC): Analysis, Design, Development, Testing, Deployment, and Post-Production Support.
Operational Focus- Proven ability to program at a system level and manage service stability; metric-driven mindset obsessed with quality, testing (unit/integration), and clean coding practices.
Mindset -Demonstrated ability for deep-dive problem-solving, systematic thinking, and effective prioritization while operating independently.
Preferred
Experience with messaging systems (e.g., RabbitMQ), log analysis (ELK Stack - Elasticsearch/Kibana), and product development within a microservices architecture.
