Engineering Manager - Data & Platform

You'll lead the team that keeps our infrastructure resilient and our data trustworthy — from cloud architecture and containerized hosting to backup/disaster recovery, observability, and the pipelines that turn raw data into insight for product and growth teams across a fast-growing SMB SaaS platform. 

What You'll Do & How You'll Make Your Mark 

This is a player-coach role: you'll manage a small team while staying hands-on as a software engineer yourself. 

As a manager 

• Lead and develop a team of ~4 engineers spanning data engineering, devops, cloud infrastructure, hosting solutions, and observability — hiring, mentoring, and owning performance and career development. 

• Set technical direction and priorities across the team's full portfolio: data pipelines, public cloud configuration, containerized hosting, backup/disaster recovery, observability, and internal automation. 

• Partner directly with product, analytics, security, and engineering leadership to translate ambiguous business needs into infrastructure and data roadmaps. 

• Drive on-call and incident-response practices so pipeline, cloud, and hosting issues are caught before they hit customers or a dashboard. 

• Report on team health, system reliability, and roadmap progress to leadership. 

As an engineer 

• Personally design, build, and maintain production systems across the team's domains — pipelines, cloud infrastructure, containerized services, and automation — not just review others' work. 

• Write and review code for data pipelines, devops tooling, cloud configuration (infrastructure-as-code), observability instrumentation, and backup/recovery solutions. 

• Own or co-own the most complex or cross-cutting technical problems — architecture decisions, major incidents, and backup/DR strategy and testing. 

• Use AI-assisted tools (Copilot, Cursor) to speed up your own development and debugging, and help the team adopt them effectively. 

• Write tested, version-controlled code and contribute to CI/CD practices that catch regressions — data-quality, infrastructure, or otherwise — before they ship. 

• Document architecture, data models, lineage, and operational runbooks so other teams can self-serve with confidence. 

Who You Are & What You'll Need to Succeed 

• 4-6 years of hands-on engineering experience across data pipelines, cloud infrastructure, or devops, including some experience leading projects, mentoring engineers, or formally managing a team. 

• Real experience building and operating production systems — not just one-off scripts — across at least two of: data pipelines, devops, cloud infrastructure, containerized hosting, observability, or backup/DR. 

• Solid experience with relational databases and dimensional data-warehousing concepts, and strong SQL skills. 

• Experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP, or Oracle Cloud) — configuration, cost management, and security fundamentals. 

• Experience with containerized hosting (Docker, Kubernetes, or similar). 

• Experience with observability tooling (Datadog, Prometheus/Grafana, ELK, or similar) and backup/disaster-recovery practices. 

• Working proficiency in Python (preferred) or another language commonly used for data or platform engineering. 

• Comfortable using AI-assisted tools (Copilot, Cursor) to speed up development, debugging, and validation. 

• Strong communicator, able to translate ambiguous business needs into technical plans for both your team and stakeholders. 

Bonus 

• Experience with cloud data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, or ClickHouse), orchestration tools (Airflow, Dagster, Prefect), or event-streaming tools (Kafka). 

• Prior experience formally managing an engineering team.
