Organizations worldwide are burdened by outdated applications that lack scalability, resilience, and cloud compatibility. Our Application Modernization team leads customers through this transformation journey—migrating from relational systems to MongoDB Atlas and accelerating the process with AI-driven code translation, refactoring, and database migration tools.
We are looking for a Director of Engineering, Application Modernization to drive this transformation at scale. This is a rare opportunity to lead a global engineering organization at the forefront of modernization and Generative AI.
This role can be based out of our Gurugram office, or remotely in India.
What You’ll Do- Lead and Inspire: Drive multiple globally distributed engineering teams, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and growth
- Set Vision: Define and execute the engineering strategy for our modernization platform, aligning with business outcomes and pushing the frontier of AI-driven modernization
- Own the Platform: Take full ownership of the Application Modernization platform—design, delivery, and operational excellence of customer-facing features
- Accelerate with AI: Champion the integration of AI-powered code translation, refactoring, and migration tooling, ensuring MongoDB becomes the easiest and smartest modernization path for enterprises
- Modernize Legacy Stacks: Lead the transformation of legacy relational and monolithic applications into modern, distributed, cloud-native architectures built on MongoDB Atlas
- Raise the Bar: Establish best practices in distributed systems design, database migrations, performance optimization, and operational excellence
- Database Expertise: Apply deep knowledge of relational (Oracle, SQL Server, Postgres, MySQL) and non-relational/document systems to help customers transition to a modern data stack
- Talent Builder: Hire, mentor, and grow world-class engineering leaders and ICs, ensuring career progression and strong technical vision
- Cross-Functional Influence: Partner with Product, Field Engineering, Data Science, Sales, and executives to align priorities and maximize customer impact
- Innovate and Experiment: Drive proof-of-concepts with emerging AI/ML technologies and strategic technology partnerships
- Be a Force Multiplier: Remove blockers, amplify team impact, and create an environment where engineers can do the best work of their careers
- Distributed Systems Expertise: Proven track record of building and scaling large-scale, distributed systems with strong performance, resilience, and reliability requirements
- Database Depth: Hands-on expertise with relational and non-relational systems, with practical knowledge of schema design, database migrations, and performance tuning
- Enterprise Scale Leadership: 10+ years leading engineering teams (including leaders-of-leaders) across globally distributed locations
- AI Mindset: Experience (or strong passion) for building AI-powered applications and developer tools
