Job Description

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

  • Create solutions based on sophisticated analytical thought comparing and selecting complex alternatives. In-depth analysis with interpretative thinking will be required to define problems and develop innovative solutions.

  • Seek out, build and maintain trusting relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders in order to accomplish key business objectives, using influencing and negotiating skills to achieve outcomes.

Engineering Lead – Technology will play a senior individual‑contributor and technical leadership role within Barclays UK (BUK) Technology, responsible for designing, building, and evolving scalable, resilient, and secure platforms. The role requires hands‑on engineering expertise combined with a strong solution architecture mindset, ensuring technology solutions align with BUK business outcomes, regulatory expectations, and enterprise architecture standards.

The role will work closely with product owners, architects, platform teams, and senior stakeholders across BUK to deliver high‑quality digital and backend services.

To be successful Engineering Lead, you should have experience with:

  • Strong experience with strong backend engineering focus

    Expert‑level Java development experience.

  • Strong hands‑on experience with Spring Boot, REST APIs, and Microservices.

  • Solid experience with Cloud platforms (AWS / Azure / GCP – Barclays internal cloud experience preferred).

  • Strong knowledge of SQL and relational databases.

  • Experience with distributed systems, service orchestration, and integration patterns. Good understanding of security, authentication, authorization, and data protection. Experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and automation

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Banking or Financial Services experience preferred. Ability to engage confidently with senior technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline. (or equivalent experience)
