Lead Engineering

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

• Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
• Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
• Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
• Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
• Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
• Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

To be successful as a Lead Engineering you should have experience with:

• Programming in Java OR Kotlin OR JavaScript/React - Demonstrated proficiency with any of these core languages depending on role (Java for backend/full-stack, Kotlin/Java for Android, JavaScript/React for full-stack frontend)
• Building and shipping production applications - Proven experience developing applications from concept to deployment, with understanding of SDLC, version control (Git), and CI/CD pipelines
• Problem-solving and analytical thinking - Ability to break down complex problems, debug systematically, and design efficient solutions; demonstrated through past projects or technical challenges
• Collaboration and communication - Strong ability to work in cross-functional teams, explain technical concepts clearly, document your work, and actively participate in code reviews

Some other highly valued skills may include:

• Database design and optimization - Experience with relational databases (SQL, PostgreSQL) OR NoSQL databases (MongoDB), understanding of schema design, indexing, and query optimization
• RESTful API design and development - Experience building, consuming, or designing REST APIs; understanding of HTTP protocols, request/response handling, and authentication mechanisms
• Testing and quality assurance - Familiarity with unit testing frameworks, integration testing, or end-to-end testing; understanding of test-driven development practices
• System design and scalability - Knowledge of building scalable systems, handling performance bottlenecks, caching strategies, OR mobile app architecture patterns 
• AI proficiency and development workflow optimization - Experience leveraging AI tools (ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Claude, OR similar) for code generation, documentation, debugging, and problem-solving; ability to evaluate and integrate AI capabilities to enhance productivity and code quality
• Continuous learning mindset - Active engagement with emerging technologies, open-source contributions, technical blogs, OR side projects demonstrating passion for engineering excellence
• Leadership and mentoring - Ability to guide junior developers, contribute to technical decisions, and help raise team standards.
