Role Overview
We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer – Kubernetes Infrastructure to own the architecture, scalability, and reliability of our Kubernetes platform.
This role focuses on:
- Cluster architecture and lifecycle management
- Load balancing and ingress design
- Deployment strategy and application rollout standards
- Kubernetes upgrades and platform modernization
- Multi-environment cluster reliability and scalability
This is not a storage or CSI-focused role. A separate Principal position owns Kubernetes-native storage integrations.
You will define how applications are deployed, upgraded, scaled, and exposed across production-grade Kubernetes environments.
Level & Scope Definition
- Own Kubernetes cluster architecture across environments.
- Define upgrade strategy for Kubernetes versions and platform components.
- Design load balancing, ingress, and service exposure architecture.
- Establish deployment standards (Helm, GitOps, CI/CD integration).
- Influence platform reliability, scaling patterns, and cost efficiency.
- Provide technical leadership without direct people management.
- Drive architectural decisions that impact multiple engineering teams.
Responsibilities
- Architect highly available Kubernetes clusters across development, staging, and production.
- Design and implement ingress, service mesh, and load balancing strategies (e.g., NGINX, Envoy, HAProxy, cloud LBs).
- Define cluster upgrade processes, zero-downtime deployment strategies, and version lifecycle governance.
- Build deployment automation using Helm, ArgoCD, or GitOps-based workflows.
- Lead application rollout strategies including canary, blue/green, and progressive delivery.
- Improve cluster observability, monitoring, and performance tuning.
- Troubleshoot production issues across networking, orchestration, and container runtime layers.
- Establish Kubernetes platform best practices and mentor engineers.
Must-Have Qualifications
- 7+ years of professional experience in infrastructure or platform engineering.
- 4+ years of hands-on Kubernetes cluster design and administration.
- Proven ownership of Kubernetes cluster upgrades across multiple versions.
- Deep understanding of:
- Kubernetes networking model
- Ingress controllers
- Load balancing architectures
- Service exposure patterns
- Experience designing highly available production clusters.
- Experience implementing deployment strategies (Helm, GitOps, CI/CD).
- Strong understanding of container runtimes (Docker, containerd).
- Experience troubleshooting distributed production systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with service mesh (Istio, Linkerd, Consul).
- Experience with multi-cluster or hybrid cloud Kubernetes environments.
- Infrastructure as Code experience (Terraform, Pulumi).
- Experience optimizing cluster cost and performance.
Ideal Qualifications
- Defined Kubernetes standards across multiple teams.
- Designed enterprise-grade platform reliability models.
- Experience running large-scale clusters (100+ nodes or high workload density).
Experience Guidelines
- 7–12 years total experience typical for success.
- 4+ years directly owning Kubernetes infrastructure.
- Demonstrated responsibility for production clusters at scale.
