Describe Pie Insurance’s company culture in one word. What made you pick that word? 

“Curiosity.” Curiosity drives everything we do at Pie. It’s the foundation of our test-and-learn approach. Our team embraces every challenge as an opportunity to think creatively, leverage individual expertise and collaborate across the business. Whether your expertise lies in claims learning and development, workers’ compensation or commercial auto, no question is off-limits. It’s this spirit of curiosity and challenge that fuels our progress.

For example, when building our claims team from the ground up, we intentionally brought together individuals from diverse professional backgrounds. Instead of defaulting to “this is the way claims organizations have to operate,” we challenged the status quo at every turn. By leveraging technology and fresh perspectives, we have been able to streamline workflows, automate repetitive tasks and implement innovative tools to improve efficiency and accuracy.

This willingness to question traditional processes allowed us to build a strong foundation and positioned us as a forward-thinking team, ready to adapt and excel in an ever-evolving industry. Our culture of curiosity ensures we continue to grow and push boundaries together.

 

How long have you been with Pie Insurance, and what professional growth or development have you seen in that time?

I’ve been with Pie since February 2022, and the professional growth I’ve experienced has been fulfilling. When I started, there were just five people on the claims team, and I’ve had the privilege of contributing to its expansion to over 45 Pie-oneers and growing.

One significant area of development has been my ability to grow my understanding of different areas of insurance. While I had worked cross-functionally at past companies, this role has deepened my understanding. When I started, I was the sole commercial auto claims person and was part of a small, agile pod of teammates working collaboratively to launch the product from the ground up. This experience gave me valuable exposure to underwriting, product development and data analytics, sharpening my problem-solving skills and providing a deeper appreciation for how different areas of the company interact.

Over time, I took on multiple roles, including leading and supporting the development of the subrogation group and most recently, taking on vendor management. These opportunities have been instrumental in enhancing my growth mindset and flexibility, expanding my understanding of the broader insurance landscape.
