Job Description

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

You will harness cutting-edge technology to revolutionize our digital offerings, ensuring unparalleled customer experiences. 

To be successful as  API Developer you should have experience with:   

  • Strong experience designing end to end solutions across APIs, microservices, data platforms, integration layers and cloud ecosystems.
  • Deep understanding of architectural patterns – event driven architecture, domain driven design, distributed systems and data modelling best practices.
  • Hands on knowledge of Java/Spring Boot–based services, RESTful APIs, and enterprise integration frameworks.
  • Expertise in producing high quality solution artefacts, including HLDs, sequence diagrams, data flow diagrams, API specs, security design and NFR definitions.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with architects, product owners, engineering leads, testing teams and control partners, ensuring alignment across delivery squads.
  • Strong understanding of application security, compliance, data governance and operational considerations such as monitoring, observability, scalability and resilience.

Some other highly valued skills may include: 

  • Experience working within the RDS/Reference Data domain, understanding entity models, master data management, lineage and golden source patterns.
  • Exposure to API management platforms (e.g., Apigee, Mulesoft or internal Barclays gateways).
  • Familiarity with messaging and streaming technologies such as Kafka, MQ or event hubs.
  • Knowledge of GitLab governance, engineering compliance and automated quality pipelines—valuable given RDS’s strong focus on standards.
  • Ability to review technical designs, mentor junior engineers and support architectural decision making.
  • Strong communication and storytelling skills, enabling you to simplify complex technical designs for diverse stakeholders.
