Platform Engineering Manager - APIs and Gateway

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

• Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
• Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
• Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
• Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
• Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
• Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

Join us as a Platform Engineering Manager - APIs and Gateway at Barclays, where you will be responsible for realizing strategic platform capabilities for our Enterprise API Gateway ecosystem. You will lead the delivery and evolution of Apigee X on Google Cloud Platform and subsequently Apigee Hybrid deployed on AWS, driving a large‑scale platform transformation from Akana to Apigee.

To be a successful Platform Engineering Manager - APIs and Gateway, you should have experience with:

• Designing, implementing, and operating API Gateway platforms (Apigee X / Apigee Hybrid or equivalent) in large-scale, enterprise environments .

• Public cloud platforms, with strong hands-on experience in GCP and working knowledge of AWS, including networking, security, and cloud-native services. 

• Infrastructure as Code and automation using Terraform, along with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps best practices.

• Leading engineering delivery using Agile methodologies, partnering effectively with Product Owners to manage backlogs, priorities, and roadmaps, Gitlab.

Additional relevant skills given below are highly valued:

• Experience leading platform migrations or transformations (e.g., Akana to Apigee, legacy to cloud-native platforms).

• Strong understanding of API security, governance, lifecycle management, and enterprise integration patterns.

• Proven ability to provide technical thought leadership, mentor engineers, and drive standardisation across federated teams.

• Experience working in regulated or financial services environments with strong focus on risk, compliance, and operational resilience, Harness.
